    Description

ANTIQUE SCOVILL MFG. CO. NY, CIRCA-1860 NEGATIVE PRINTING CONTACT FRAME W GLASS

This came from the estate of a professional photographer who is no longer with us.  He left behind hundreds of large format cameras, lenses and accessories...

According to my research, this could possibly date to 1860.  I cannot substantiate that but I would bet my life on it being well over 100 years old.  It bares Hallmarks on the 2 brass center plates. "Patent Applied For" is also stamped in wood below dial and the Manufacturer's name is again stamped into the wood on the lower rail of frame.

The previous owner built a box around it as shown in photos. Dimensions of the original frame are: 7" x 9" x 1".  The added frame expands those dimensions to: 9" x 11-1/8"

The glass is included and in excellent condition.  The material on the hinged board is not in good shape but is still mostly intact.

There is lots of wear to the wood as is expected with an old antique which was actually used by a photographer...

I believe with a but of effort, it could be cleaned and restored a bit but I think it kind of sacrilegious to meddle with the past like that so I have left it as found.

The following information was printed in The Photographic Times, 1889~

"How to make photographs by Scovill Mfg Co {New York} NY.  Place the negative film side up in the print frame, upon the negative lay a piece of ferro-prussiate paper { this should be handled in a dim light} with the colored side down. Close the back of the printing frame and fasten it by setting the springs. Carry the printing frame to some place where the sunlight will fall upon it and from time to time examine the print. As soon as the picture is clearly seen take it out of the printers box and throw it into a clean pan of water......"
