"I hereby authorize Byron Foy hereinafter referred to as the 'Producer,' to pay to Motion Picture Relief Fund of America, Inc., an amount equal to one-half of one percent of each installment of salary or compensation payable to me for services rendered and/or to be rendered by me for said Producer, and to deduct the same from each installment of salary or compensation due me from said Producer. This instrument shall be effective as of March 2, 1938 and shall continue thereafter until written notice of the revocation hereof has been received from me by said Producer as well as by said Motion Picture Relief Fund of America, Inc."
Humphrey Bogart
(
1899-1957
) began his acting career in 1920 while working as a road company manager. He began to act on Broadway in 1922 and appeared in 17 plays, his last in 1935. Bogart appeared in nine films (1930-1934) in between his Broadway roles.
He portrayed Duke Mantee in Robert E. Sherwood's
The Petrified Forest
(1935), reprising his role in the 1936 film. When he appeared in
Crime School
, Bogart was not yet a top-billed star - billed after the Dead End Kids in this movie which cast him as a good guy
(reform school administrator)
.
More typically, the early film Bogart played gangsters, as in
The Petrified Forest
and
Angels with Dirty Faces
(1938). Bogart's screen persona of a tough guy with a tender heart would come later, in films like
High Sierra
(1941),
Casablanca
(1942),
Key Largo
(1948), and
The African Queen
(which earned him the 1952 Oscar for Best Actor). Bogart's legendary romance with Lauren Bacall was also in the future, but Bogey shows his tender heart here by this voluntary salary deduction for the Motion Picture Relief Funded, which aided ill and indigent fellow actors.
Signed Bogart contracts, especially early ones, are very desirable!
