    Description

    Large theatrical poster lithographed in color by Shober & Carqueville Lith. Co in Chicago for the performance of Denman Thompson as “Uncle Josh” at the Shultz Opera House in Zanesville, Ohio. The 21x28” poster is taped on its edges with old masking tape to a mat with full borders, with a triangular chip measuring approximately 2” in length on the bottom edge of the print and extending ½” into the white border. There are 2 spots of rough edges also on the bottom edge, which extend no more than ¼” into the white border. Denman Thompson (1833-1911) was an actor and playwright who began his career in Worcester, MA. In 1871 he appeared in a vaudeville sketch called “Joshua Whitcomb” which elaborated into a play called “The Old Homestead”. He wrote “Uncle Josh” in a week and it was first performed in 1881 and was a hit for 24 years. The image shows a man being thrown out a window, with a grieving woman attending a man lying on the floor on a mattress. The Shultz Opera House in Zanesville, Ohio opened in 1880 with a seating capacity of 1118. Shober & Carqueville were major chromolithographers in Chicago for many years, and produced many theatrical posters.
    Condition:
    The colors are vibrant, and outside of a couple of light stains on the white borders, there are no other tears or restorations visible other than previously noted.
